Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Dongjangdae is where generals commanded military training, also called Yeonmudae. Hwaseong has two command posts; after Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was completed, Yeonmudae was used as a regular training ground for soldiers, while Seojangdae served as the military training command post. Dongjangdae divides the entire site into three levels, with a ramp in the middle of the yard for generals to ascend on horseback. Originally, the front was open, while the other three sides were walled or windowed, with a single ondol room at the innermost part. Behind the building, there is a decorative wall made of roof tiles called Yeongnongjang. Yeonmudae is located on a high hill between Changnyongmun (the east gate of Hwaseong) and Hwahongmun (the north water gate), open on all sides, making it a strategic military point for observing the fortress from the east side of Hwaseong. It is a space for handling swords, spears, and bows, and has been a renowned archery range for over 200 years. Additionally, Yeonmudae is known as a historic site along with Hwanghakjeong in Sajik Park, Seokhojeong on Namsan, and Cheonyangjeong in Jeonju.
