Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located near Changnyongmun Gate in Maehyang-dong, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Dongbukgongsimdon (東北空心墩) is a watchtower used to observe the surroundings of the fortress and monitor enemy movements in emergencies, first appearing in Hwaseong Fortress. Completed in 1796 (the 20th year of King Jeongjo's reign) with a height of 5.42m and a circumference of 38m, it was completely destroyed during the Korean War and restored in 1975. In addition to this, Hwaseong Fortress also has Seobukgongsimdon and Namgongsimdon. Dongbukgongsimdon is not only a strategic military point but also the only circular structure among the buildings of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, making it highly rare. With its large round shape, the interior features a spiral brick staircase resembling a snail shell, leading to the top, which is why it is also called 'Sora-gak' (Snail Pavilion). From the top floor, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Hwaseong Fortress.
