Seounsanseong Fortress

Seounsanseong Fortress is located on Seounsan Mountain (elevation 539m), a main peak of the Charyeong Mountain Range. From the summit, it offers panoramic views of Anseong, Pyeongtaek, Cheonan, and Asan Bay, making it a strategic vantage point. The fortress walls connect two peaks at the summit of Seounsan Mountain, encircling the mountain's belly. Except for part of the southern wall, the walls are relatively well-preserved. The fortress has a perimeter of 620m, with about 450m of earthen ramparts. Its overall plan is an elongated rectangular shape running east-west. The walls were built by piling earth along the ridge. In some sections, walls were omitted or slopes were created by cutting earth according to the natural terrain. There are gate sites on the north and south, with the south gate appearing to have been the main entrance. Inside the fortress, a commander's rock believed to have been used for command during battles, a well site, a temple site, a stone Buddha, a small cave, and fragments of earthenware and roof tiles have been discovered. Based on construction methods and excavated artifacts, Seounsanseong Fortress may have been a Baekje fortress from the Three Kingdoms period, but no excavation has been conducted, so the exact builder and construction period are unknown. The artifacts found inside suggest that a fortress built during the Three Kingdoms period may have been repaired and used during the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea, 1592–1598).
