Why travelers stop here
Located 17km south of Samcheok city center, this small and quiet beach boasts a 1km-long white sand beach and clean seawater, creating a natural scenic beauty. Munam Beach, lined with dense pine forests along the beach road, offers many attractions nearby, including the birthplace of Hwang Young-jo, the marathon hero of the Barcelona Olympics, and the Hwang Young-jo Memorial Park built to commemorate his Olympic victory. There is also a railway tunnel built by the Japanese during the colonial period for resource exploitation. Recently, a natural stone statue of Maitreya Buddha was discovered on the beach, drawing attention. The nearby Chogok Port offers fresh raw fish from boats arriving there, providing a good dining experience. It is recommended to also visit Hwansun Cave, the longest cave in Korea at 6.2km, featuring various cave formations, stalactites, and quartz, as well as Jangho Port, both in the vicinity.
