Chuncheon Hydroelectric Power Plant

Chuncheon Hydroelectric Power Plant is a dam located in the northwestern part of Chuncheon-si, upstream of the Bukhangang River, built to address severe power shortages. It faced difficulties due to the inadequacy of early power policies and funding challenges, but with full government support, construction began in September 1961. After 42 months, the installation of a 57,600 kW turbine generator was completed and the plant was inaugurated. The construction involved extensive use of domestic materials and local technical personnel, serving as a turning point for technology accumulation. It also provides flood control for the Han River system and supplies water for power generation to the downstream Uiam, Cheongpyeong, and Paldang plants.

The electricity generated here is sent to the Gyeongin region. In 2009, performance improvements transformed it into an eco-friendly power plant with significantly enhanced capacity and efficiency. The complete replacement of power generation equipment increased capacity and improved overall efficiency. Through the performance improvement project, Chuncheon Hydroelectric Power Plant can operate for over 30 more years and supply enough electricity annually for about three-quarters of all households in Chuncheon-si. It also achieves a reduction of approximately 105,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
