Destination briefing
Why travelers stop here
This is the area where coal was first discovered in Taebaek City in 1928 by a Japanese geologist. Because the coal is exposed on the surface, the stream water turns black after rain, so it was called Geomeunnae (Black Stream) or Geomcheon (Black Creek). The Geumcheongol area consists of the Carboniferous Manhang Formation, the Geumcheon Formation conformably overlying the Manhang Formation, the Permian Jangseong Formation unconformably overlying the Geumcheon Formation, and the Hambaeksan Formation conformably or unconformably overlying the Jangseong Formation. On the road cut slopes of Geumcheongol, one can observe Paleozoic coal seams, plant fossils, and the geological features of the sedimentary rocks formed at that time.
