First Coal Discovery Site Monument

From near the Late Paleozoic Hambaeksan Formation in Jangseong-dong, Taebaek-si, take the main road about 500m south to a fork leading to Geumcheon-dong. Follow this road for a few hundred meters to find the 'First Coal Discovery Site Monument' near Geumcheon-dong's Meokdolbaegi, built of granite. The monument consists of four components: a tower body symbolizing a mine shaft, a mine cart, and a miner's lamp. The road cut facing the monument is an outcrop of the Jangseong Formation, where plant fossils and economically viable coal seams were found in alternating black shale and sandstone layers. This area was mined for a long time but is now closed, and the former mine office building remains across the road.
