Destination briefing
Why travelers stop here
Jungnim-dong Cathedral is the first cathedral in Chuncheon and the bishop's seat of the Catholic Diocese of Chuncheon. On the hill at the entrance of Jungnim-dong Cathedral stands a bronze Sacred Heart of Jesus statue, which is 3.5m tall and 3m wide, making it the largest of its kind in Korea. The Sacred Heart of Jesus statue stands with both arms outstretched as if embracing the world. The cross on the central bell tower of the cathedral is identical in shape to that of Myeongdong Cathedral, the bishop's seat of the Archdiocese of Seoul, symbolizing that Jungnim-dong Cathedral shares the same roots as the Archdiocese of Seoul. Jungnim-dong Cathedral has had a significant influence on Korean cathedral architecture. During a major renovation in 1998, works by artists from the Catholic Artists Association were installed in the cathedral. This is why Jungnim-dong Cathedral is called a treasure trove of Korean Catholic art.
