Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Jangmyeongsa Temple [長明寺] of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism is a memorial temple for those who died in coal mining industrial accidents, imbued with the history of the coal industry in Taebaek and Yeongwol. Jangmyeongsa refers to the calm and clear fundamental state of mind where all mental afflictions disappear through the wisdom and compassion of the sublime Buddha. This embodies the deep meaning of praying for the rebirth in Paradise of the spirits of those who died in coal mining industrial accidents through the Buddha's grace and majestic power, consoling the grieving hearts of the bereaved families, and wishing for hope and courage in life. Even now, on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month (Dano), a memorial rite is held every year, hosted by the Korea Coal Corporation and presided over by Jangmyeongsa Temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of those who died in coal mining industrial accidents, people in the cold times were able to burn briquettes and stay warm and happy.
