Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Gangwon Police Memorial Tower is located in Sinmae-ri, Seomyeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do. In front of the memorial tower, the Bukhangang River flows gently, and next to the tower stands a zelkova tree, said to be several hundred years old, gifted by former President Syngman Rhee. This memorial tower was established to honor the spirits of Gangwon police officers who died in action during the Korean War or who died in the line of duty, and to pass on their noble spirit of sacrifice to future generations. It was first erected on Bongui Mountain in Chuncheon. Later, in January 2000, the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency built it at its current location, enshrining a total of 686 individuals: 525 war dead and 161 who died in the line of duty. The memorial tower is a sculpture depicting a golden eagle, the symbol of the police, soaring powerfully into the sky, well representing the majesty of the police. Every year, on New Year's Day and on Memorial Day, June 6, a memorial rite is held to honor the spirits of the fallen police officers.
