Chungnyeoltap (Gangwon)

The Udu Mountain area, where Chungnyeoltap is located, is a historic site where the 6th Division, the parent unit of the Republic of Korea Army's 2nd Corps at the beginning of the Korean War (June 25–28, 1950), united with patriotic Chuncheon citizens to annihilate the main forces of the North Korean 2nd Corps' 2nd and 7th Divisions, which had launched wave attacks using human wave tactics. This marked the only victory on the front lines in the early stages of the Korean War. The North Korean defeat in the battles of Chuncheon and Udu Mountain dealt a critical blow to their plan for a swift conquest, leading to the dismissal of the enemy's 2nd Corps commander, and left a record of the most brilliant victory in Korean War history. Notably, during this battle, Chuncheon citizens, student soldiers from the Student Defense Corps, and female workers from a munitions factory joined ROK soldiers in transporting ammunition and participating in combat, engaging in a bloody struggle that brought about a shining victory. This not only set an example of a total civilian-government effort but also elevated the residents' fervent anti-communist patriotism and will to defend freedom to the world. It was built in 1955 by soldiers of the 29th Division of the 3rd Corps to honor the fallen heroes of the Korean War, and a memorial ceremony is held annually on Memorial Day.
